Quick answer: Cambodia's Water Festival, Bon Om Touk, runs November 23–25, 2026 — a three-day public holiday, less than a month away. Phnom Penh's riverside fills with boat racing, crowds and fireworks; hotels near Sisowath Quay book out first, roads around the riverfront close, and prices for the best-located rooms rise. If you want to be there, book this week; if you want quiet, Siem Reap and Kampot celebrate at a gentler scale.
This is the practical companion to our main Cambodia Water Festival 2026 guide and our Cambodia in November month guide — the same festival, viewed from four weeks out: what to book now, what to expect on the ground, and how to enjoy the biggest party in the Cambodian calendar without fighting it.
Your room first. Riverside and Daun Penh hotels with a river view go earliest; BKK1, a 15-minute walk south, is the value fallback with better restaurants for escaping the crowds. Your arrival second. Plan to land at Techo International Airport by November 22 at the latest — the 23rd is a holiday, the city is in festival mode, and you want your e-Arrival card and visa sorted before the fun starts, not during it. Your onward travel third. Buses and the popular routes out of the capital on November 26 sell into a country that has just had three days off; book the Phnom Penh to Siem Reap leg early if that is your plan.
Longboat races run on the Tonle Sap river in front of the Royal Palace through the afternoons, with crews from across the country racing in heats. Evenings bring illuminated floats, fireworks and the festival food you only get once a year — including ak ambok, pounded rice with coconut and banana, eaten by moonlight on the final night. The crowd is the headline and the hazard in one: millions visit across the festival, the quay is shoulder-to-shoulder at peak hours, and the riverside road network closes to traffic, which makes Grab pickups near the river slow and confusing. Walk the last stretch; agree a meeting point away from the quay if you get separated.
Crowds this dense are pickpocket habitat anywhere on earth. Carry a cross-body bag in front, leave the passport in the hotel safe (a photo of it on your phone is your daily copy), and keep cash split between two pockets — our Cambodia scams guide covers the festival-season versions of the classics. November is the kind end of the year for weather — rains easing, evenings almost cool by Cambodian standards — but race afternoons are still full sun: hat, water, and the shade strategy of watching one heat, then retreating to a riverside café for the next. A local SIM bought on arrival beats hotel Wi-Fi when the networks get busy; the eSIM vs SIM guide has the honest comparison.
Siem Reap runs smaller races on its river with a fraction of the crush, and you can pair them with sunrise at Angkor using our Angkor Pass guide. Kampot celebrates at town scale on the river it lives on. Both are good festivals; only Phnom Penh is the full, glorious, overwhelming original. Whichever you choose, the dates are the same national holiday — banks, offices and some businesses close November 23–25, so sort money and paperwork the week before with our money in Cambodia guide.
Read the 2026 update first: the capital's races are cancelled this year, so prep now means holiday logistics and the Siem Reap provincial option, not a race-view room.
Dates confirmed against Cambodia's 2026 public holiday calendar (Water Festival, November 23–25, 2026) and checked October 28, 2026. Festival programming details can be adjusted by the authorities closer to the event — re-check official announcements in mid-November if your plans depend on a specific ceremony.
