Direct answer: No — a Cambodia Tourist (T) visa can never be converted into a business, retirement, job-seeking or student extension after you arrive. A Tourist visa can be extended exactly once, by 30 days (about $45 through an agent), and then you must leave. Every long-stay extension — EB, ER, EG and ES — is only reachable if you entered on an Ordinary (E) visa, which costs $35 as an eVisa or on arrival. If there is any chance you will stay longer, work, retire or study in Cambodia, enter on the E visa, not the T.

This is the single most expensive paperwork mistake visitors make in Cambodia, and it is made before the plane lands. This page answers the conversion question directly, then explains the two entry visas, the one extension a Tourist visa does allow, and what to do if you are already here on the wrong one. The full menu is in Cambodia visa types explained.

Can I convert a Cambodia tourist visa into a business or retirement visa after I arrive?

No. There is no conversion process, no form and no fee that turns a T visa into an E-class status inside Cambodia. Agents who suggest otherwise are either confused or selling you a border run dressed up as paperwork. The T and E tracks are separate from the moment of entry: the T track ends at one 30-day extension and an exit; the E track is the only door into the extension system described in our complete extension guide.

What is the difference between the Tourist (T) and Ordinary (E) visa?

Both give you 30 days on arrival and both are sold at the same counters and the same official website, which is exactly why people pick the wrong one. The Tourist (T) visa costs $30 and is for holidays: 30 days, extendable once by 30 days. The Ordinary (E) visa costs $35 — five dollars more — and is the long-stay entry ticket: the same first 30 days, but from it you can extend into EB (business), ER (retirement, 55+), EG (job-seeking) or ES (student) status for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months at a time. Our official eVisa walkthrough shows where the T/E choice appears in the application, and visa on arrival covers the same choice at the counter.

What happens if I entered on a Tourist visa and want to stay longer?

You have three real options. Extend once: a single 30-day T extension, about $45 through an agent, buys you time but changes nothing about the track you are on. Leave and re-enter on an E: the standard fix — exit to Vietnam (the Bavet–Moc Bai crossing is the main open overland route; our Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City walkthrough covers it) or fly out and back, and this time enter on the Ordinary visa. Note that the Thailand land borders have been closed since June 2025, so the old Poipet visa run does not exist — status on our border status page. Do not overstay while deciding: overstay fines run $10 a day with no cap, and passing 30 days of overstay means clearing it at immigration in Phnom Penh — the full picture is in overstaying in Cambodia.

How do I make sure I enter on the right visa?

Decide before you apply, not at the counter. If your trip is a pure holiday with a fixed exit, the T visa is fine and $5 cheaper. If there is any chance — even a small one — that you will look for work, retire, study, volunteer long-term or simply stay on, pay the $35 and take the E. On the eVisa site, select the Ordinary visa; on arrival, ask for the Ordinary (E) visa explicitly and check the sticker class before you walk away from the desk. Then, once you are in, the extension that matches your plan: EB and the work permit for workers, ER for the retired, EG for job-seekers — and the head-to-head is in ER vs EB.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Cambodia tourist visa be extended?

Yes — once only, by 30 days, for about $45 through an agent. It cannot be extended a second time and it cannot be changed into any other visa class.

How much does the Ordinary (E) visa cost?

$35, as an eVisa at the official evisa.gov.kh or on arrival, against $30 for the Tourist (T) visa. The $5 difference buys access to the entire extension system.

I am already in Cambodia on a Tourist visa and got offered a job. What do I do?

Do not start work on the T visa. The standard fix is to leave and re-enter on an Ordinary (E) visa — Vietnam via Bavet–Moc Bai is the main open overland route — then extend into EB and arrange the work permit.
